Here are a few photos from our field trip to Camden Yards. We had a blast going behind the scenes! We even sat in the dugout.
Our class poetry book is ready for purchase! If you would like to see a copy we have one in our classroom. The students are SO excited to have a REAL book of their poetry. It was created through Shutterfly so look out for coupons before purchasing it. They always offer 30-50% off or free shipping. Sneak a peek and you can also purchase it by clicking below. Here is a look at our week before spring break. We had our first ever poetry picnic which was a lot of fun. We topped it off with healthy snacks and enjoyed the weather outside. In math that same week we learned time by making a huge interactive clock and we reviewed making numbers by creating graffiti posters. We also finished the week with some jelly bean science and took our plants home. Hope everyone had a great spring break and see you on Tuesday! While the 3-5 graders were taking MSA, we were able to use the time for 2 days if STEM activities. We learned that STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. Here is a quick look at our week... For math this week we visited GregTangMath.com. Greg Tang is a popular author who writes math riddle books. They are great for thinking about numbers in different ways. On his website we played the game "Kokuma". Can you figure this math puzzle: 7, 2, 10, 3? We loved STEM!! We realized how much fun we can have learning about science, technology, engineering, and math! We have been reading the book Judy Moody Was in A Mood, By Megan McDonald. It's a hilarious story with lots of laughs. We have been analyzing for character traits as we read about the main character, Judy. In one chapter, Judy wants a new pet. At the pet store she can't decide what she wants. Then she sees an interesting plant. It's a Venus Fly Trap! Now it's time to meet our new class pet... After a very close vote, Jaws Jr. is named after Judy's Venus Fly Trap in the book. Other names students voted on included: Cupcake (2nd place), Claws, and Jaw Breaker. We celebrated the beloved author all last week. Not only did we wear crazy socks or dress like twins, but we read a Dr. Seuss book each day. We even read his very first childrens book "To Think I Saw It On Mulberry Street". Here is a peek into our week! (Now Dr.Seuss has got my rhyming!) Reading with the 4th graders on pajama day: What an exciting week! We love Dr.Seuss!
Today was 'out of this world'! The students did an amazing job presenting their fictional creative writing stories. All were based in space, but each had their own unique story with a problem and solution. Here are some pictures from today. What a fun day! I am so excited to announce that our Donors Choose project was fully funded by 4 generous donors! This week we received our brand new nonfiction guided reading books. We can't wait to use them and thank those who helped us. We can't wait to start our next Donors Choose project :) We were awfully busy in first grade this fall and into December. But before we went on winter break we had quite a fun filled week! Here is a little peek into the end of 2013 :) That was just a few things we did in December. Hope everyone enjoyed their break and had a few lazy days to relax... Just like Rocco! The school year is definitely in full swing. I can't believe October is here already. Here is a peak at what we have been up to in Mrs. Stern's classroom. We are really "digging in" and have started learning about rocks and fossils. Here we are observing rocks and sand with real magnifying glasses... just like REAL geologists. Here we are having fun with place value in math! We learned the basics of re-grouping a group of 10 ones to make a ten. We raced against one another to see who could reach the 100 first. It was a lot of fun. (Who knew the kiddos were so competitive?! ;-) We also tied place value to real life. We used "Stern Bucks" to practice counting money when we went on a virtual shopping trip to the toy store. The kids said I was not a very good bus driver lol. In writing we have begun to write our own personal narratives. We brainstormed ideas to create a chart of special moments in our lives. Well that was just a little peak of what we have been up to in the classroom.
