Here's a snap shot of our first 2 weeks of school. We have been learning classroom routines which will help to build independence. One way we begin to build independence is by working on our stamina to do certain tasks. We refer to it as the "Daily 5" and the first task we learn is "reading to self".
To build our reading stamina, we learned the 3 ways to read a book. Then we practiced each day. When we reached certain goals, we got rewards such as being able to sit anywhere in the room and book bins.
I'm proud to say, the students did amazing!! We reached 20 minutes in 6 days!! We voted to celebrate our 20 minute goal with a "brain break" dance party.
In addition to building stamina in reading, we talked about school rules and getting along.
We learned a great lesson reading Chrysanthemum. We learned to be careful of the words we say to one another because it's hard to fix a wrinkled heart.
Last, one of the concepts we refer to is "bucket filling". Everyone had an imaginary bucket. We are "bucket fillers" when we use kind words, smile, treat one another nicely. We are "bucket dippers" when we are mean to one another, disrespectful, or bully. In our classroom, we also have a class bucket. When we do a good job as a class or receive class compliments, we get to fill our bucket.
That's just a small look into 1st grade so far :) Looking forward to posting again!! Hope you enjoyed!!
