In math we have been working with missing addends and subtrahends. From balancing equations with missing numbers to word problems, we have been learning many ways to solve the types of problems. Last Friday we created our own "Hungry Bill" word problems with "change unknown" equations.
We started the week with a little St.Patty's Day fun. We left a letter for the Leprechaun on Friday....
... But he decided to cause a little mischief in our anyway! Messing up student's desks and hiding gold coins. It was a fun way to begin the week.

Last Friday we created our own "Hungry Bill" word problems with "change unknown" equations. On Monday we finished them and got to share them with one another to see if our partner could find the missing addend in the equation.
It was a fun activity all the students enjoyed and learned from :)

Last week we celebrated Dr.Seuss' birthday throughout the week. We read many of his books including The Lorax, and A Wocket in my Pocket.
When we read A Wocket in my Pocket, we created our own classroom version of the book. Here are some of the student's versions: When we read The Lorax we discussed pollution and the things that could happen. Then we wrote about what we would do if we had the last Truffula Tree seed. Afterwards, we created our own Lorax mustaches!
Even Rocco wanted to wear a mustache:
It was a fun week. Well it's always fun with Dr.Seuss!! :)
This week the student's have been practicing fluency during reading. Fluency in reading is accuracy of the words they are reading, using expression to read, and speed at which the words are read. To practice, we used Reader's Theater. Student's were paired together and learned a small play. They practiced throughout the week by learning what the play was about, reading in a group, then reading it together with their partner. To emphasize expression, we even practiced using different voices which the student's loved. To hear the audio of the student's plays please click the link below. We will be doing one more set of Reader's Theater plays next week to continue practicing fluency. At home students can practice by reading their books with expression - is it a question? is the character excited? Fluency can be FUN!
On Friday we ventured to the Maryland Science Center. It was a fun filled day of dinosaurs, planets, hurricanes and explosions. Here are a few photos from the day.
Here are drawings of the some of the students favorite part of the Science Center:
As you can see the hurricane wind machine was quite popular! What a great day. Thanks again to all the parents who were able to chaperone and help with the students.
